Oracle Data Center Delay Sparks Fresh Caution in Artificial Intelligence Funding

Project Delay
Oracle recently sent a legal notice to protect itself from potential delays at a massive data center development in New Mexico. The Jupiter campus is being built by STACK Infrastructure, a unit of Blue Owl, to support OpenAI. Oracle cited problems in securing enough electricity for the site as the main reason for invoking these protective contract clauses, which pushes the timeline back by a full year.
Market Impact
This move sent a chill across the massive sector that funds artificial intelligence infrastructure. Blue Owl has roughly $3 billion of equity invested in this project and makes a lower return while building it, with higher profits only starting once the center is finished. Meanwhile, SB Energy delayed its initial public offering this week as the situation rattles talks around other proposed data center deals.
Growing Pressures
Financial institutions are growing much more cautious about funding the industry's rapid expansion. Higher US interest rates are forcing Wall Street to closely check the economics of deals, meaning even the involvement of highly rated firms like Oracle does not fully calm worried investors. Moody's projects that capital spending by the six biggest US tech companies will reach about $1 trillion by 2027, making lenders wonder if markets can handle that much debt without trouble.
Other Challenges
Data center projects face obstacles from local residents as well. Research firm Data Center Watch notes that at least 45 projects worth $68 billion faced community opposition in the second quarter of 2026, following 75 disruptions worth $130 billion in the first quarter. Blackstone even ended its planned Virginia project in July after years of review. Following news of the New Mexico dispute, Oracle stock dropped 3.5% on Thursday while Blue Owl fell 3.6%. Blue Owl stated that all parties remain committed to the project and that the notice does not alter their financial agreements.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Oracle issued a legal notice regarding a major data center project in New Mexico due to power supply delays, shaking confidence across the sector that funds artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Why It Matters
Building artificial intelligence systems requires massive computing power housed in specialized data centers, which in turn demands billions in debt and equity financing. When high-profile projects face delays or legal disputes over contract protections, lenders get nervous, interest rates rise, and obtaining capital becomes harder and more expensive for the entire tech industry.
What Happens Next
Lenders and investors will likely demand stricter contract terms and higher yields before backing future data center builds, while developers may face tougher scrutiny from both financial institutions and local communities objecting to power and land use.
