First Test in Orbit

Google will soon launch a prototype satellite to test how its custom artificial intelligence chips perform in outer space. The mission, named Project Suncatcher, is scheduled to start its first test on October 1. Google designed Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, to speed up machine learning and artificial intelligence tasks.

Partners and Rocket Ride

Google built the prototype satellite in partnership with Planet. The hardware will travel into space on a SpaceX Transporter-18 mission. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the project in a post on X, questioning whether the company's custom chips can survive and operate in space. Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk also backed the idea, stating that computing power in space will eventually reach one hundred percent.

Long-Term Goals

Project Suncatcher is a long-term research project exploring if space can host scalable machine learning infrastructure. Satellites in low Earth orbit receive near-constant sunlight and can generate up to eight times more solar power than they would on the ground. Google eventually wants to link multiple satellite constellations together to handle larger artificial intelligence workloads while in orbit. The company notes that this transition requires careful engineering, starting with this first launch to test hardware limits and identify potential problems.
