What Happened

Google announced a new tool called 'Call for Me' on Thursday, September 24. This feature allows the Gemini AI assistant to make phone calls to real-world businesses on behalf of users. People can ask Gemini to call a store and check if an item is available, book a table at a restaurant, or schedule an appointment at a doctor's office.

How It Works

Gemini uses the user's own phone number to place the call directly from their device. When someone or a bot answers, Gemini introduces itself, handles automated phone menus, and waits on hold. Users can read a live transcript of the conversation as it happens and take over the call whenever they want. The AI can also share a user's personal details during the call if the user gives approval first.

Availability and Background

Right now, the feature is in an experimental phase. It is only available to Pixel 11 owners who have a Gemini subscription in the United States. Users also need to download the beta version of Google's Phone app on Android. Google stated it is testing the feature on a small scale because real conversations are complex, and the company wants to get it right before a wider release. This builds on past Google tools like 'Hold for Me', 'Talk to a Live Rep', 'Direct My Call', and last year's 'Ask for Me'. Similar AI agents from other companies, such as Meta's Muse and Instinct, can also make calls for users.
