Quality, manufacturing standards, and clinical evidence play a vital role in the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists for type 2 diabetes management. Dr. M.V. Rama Mohan, a consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at the Diabetes & Endocrine Clinic and Apollo Specialty Hospitals in Pinakini Nagar, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, explains that quality covers every stage of development, from the science behind the molecule to manufacturing processes and clinical proof. This is crucial for chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes where patients take medication for years. India has more than 100 million adults living with diabetes, and that figure is projected to pass 150 million by 2050. Indians develop type 2 diabetes nearly a decade earlier than people in many Western countries, raising their lifetime risk of heart and kidney complications. Only three in ten diabetes patients in the country reach their recommended blood sugar targets. Certain GLP-1 treatments use recombinant DNA technology, and controlled manufacturing ensures consistent quality and stability. Peptide-based medicines are complex, meaning small production changes can alter how they work in the body, making strict standards necessary. Strong clinical trials and real-world data give doctors confidence in long-term safety and effectiveness. Beyond blood sugar control, research is studying these therapies for other metabolic conditions, while proper patient selection, doctor supervision, and education remain essential for safe use.
