What Happened

Around 100 regional South Australian students performed alongside the Adelaide Youth Orchestra in a one‑day concert at Peterborough Town Hall, marking their first in‑person music lessons in five years. The event, now in its third year, brought music learners from 14 schools across the Mid North and Southern Flinders Ranges together. Students had practiced the pieces all year and, for many, it was the first time playing in a large ensemble.

Reaction

The concert was the brainchild of music teacher Kate Mawson, who previously taught instrumental music online to nine schools. Mawson said, “Learning instruments in such a remote way, what better way to come with a common interest in one central location.” She added she used “colourful dots” on instruments to guide remote students. Lucas Wood of Orroroo Area School noted that in‑person trumpet lessons were easier than online, saying the loud instrument “doesn’t cross through” well online. He performed a solo and admitted he felt nervous but confident. Toby Nutt, a repeat participant, said practicing at home meant moving rooms each time, and that the large group helped mask any mistakes.

Background

The Instrumental Music program of the South Australian Department for Education supplies weekly teachers to regional schools, but only once a year do all students gather in one room. Program leader David Hopgood explained staffing gaps lasted until the end of last year when two in‑person teachers were hired.

Context

Such gatherings give remote learners rare exposure to full‑ensemble performance and help sustain music education in isolated communities.
