Ovarian cysts affect many women between the ages of 15 and 45, often bringing pelvic pain, bloating, irregular periods, and hormonal imbalance. While most functional cysts go away on their own, plenty of women search for a long-term, natural solution. Ayurveda treats these cysts by focusing on the root cause rather than just managing the symptoms.
The Ayurvedic View
Dr Chanchal Sharma, founder of Asha Ayurveda in New Delhi, explains that Ayurveda is the science of life and rests on four main pillars. These pillars include balancing the doshas, treating the root cause, using natural herbs and lifestyle corrections, and supporting overall physical, mental, and hormonal health. In Ayurvedic terms, an ovarian cyst is known as 'Granthi' and is viewed mainly as a Kapha-Vata disorder. It develops when toxins, or 'Ama', build up due to poor digestion, bad diet, and hormonal imbalance. The goal of this treatment is not only to shrink the cyst but also to fix the hormonal imbalance so the cysts do not return.
Treatment and Remedies
Doctors use classical Ayurvedic formulations like Kanchanar Guggulu, Ashokarishta, and Shatavari under expert supervision to support hormonal balance and reduce cyst size. Patients are also advised to practice specific yoga asanas like Bhujangasana and Supta Baddha Konasana, along with Pranayama like Kapalbhati, which can improve blood circulation to the ovaries and show results within three to four months. Dietary changes include eating curd for gut health and ginger to reduce inflammation, while avoiding processed and Kapha-increasing foods. Dr Sharma also stresses that every cyst is different in size and nature, meaning people must avoid self-medication and get proper sonography and Ayurvedic Nadi Pariksha before starting any treatment.
Context
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or inside an ovary when an egg is not released properly or a follicular sac fails to close. While many cases resolve without intervention, persistent symptoms like pelvic pain or irregular periods often lead patients to explore alternative systems of medicine alongside conventional checkups.
