Choosing a Mask

Certified respirators like N95, KN95, or FFP2 help lower exposure to tiny pollution particles when children must step outside. Dr Amit Gupta from Motherhood Hospitals suggests child-sized N95 or KN95 options for kids who are older than five or six years. Parents need to check for a proper filter, a soft inside layer, and adjustable straps instead of picking masks based on cartoon prints. Dr Ravi Malik from Malik Radix Health Care notes that certified respirators are the only type that truly filter PM2.5 particles, which cause harm to young lungs. He advises skipping masks that have valves because they let out exhaled air and do not fit small faces well.

Fit and Safety

Dr Sumera Khan from Crescent Hospital states that a mask must cover both the nose and the chin without any visible gaps near the cheeks or the nose bridge. If air leaks near the eyes or cheeks, or if eyeglasses fog up, the fit is incorrect. Dr Indu Khosla from Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital mentions that getting a tight seal on a child's face can be difficult. She adds that masks should never block a child's vision, slip while talking, or require constant adjustment. Parents must avoid folding or knotting adult masks to fit children. Infants under two years old should never wear masks due to suffocation risks, while toddlers aged two to five should wear them only for brief periods under watch and never while sleeping. Cloth and regular surgical masks fail to block fine particles because they fit loosely and were meant only for droplets.

Context

Air pollution levels frequently spike in various parts of India, prompting parents to look for protective gear during hazardous weather. Medical professionals regularly issue safety guidance to help families navigate these seasonal pollution surges safely. Understanding correct mask fitting and age limits is vital to protect children from respiratory issues during peak smog periods.
