Heavy Rain Forces School Closures Across Six Taluks in Nilgiris

Schools in six taluks of the Nilgiris district remain closed today, October 24, following continuous heavy rainfall. The Northeast monsoon has grown stronger across Tamil Nadu, bringing heavy rain to several areas and light rain to others. Continuous downpours in the Nilgiris have triggered landslides in multiple locations, disrupting the normal daily life of residents. To ensure safety, the district collector has ordered a holiday for all schools situated across six specific taluks. These include Udhagamandalam, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Kundah, Gudalur, and Pandalur.

Context

Heavy monsoon rains frequently trigger landslides and waterlogging in hilly regions like the Nilgiris, prompting local authorities to shut educational institutions as a precaution. Such temporary closures are a standard administrative step taken by district heads to protect students and staff during severe weather alerts.
