A two-tonne parking pallet slipped while workers were carrying out maintenance work at the multi-level car parking facility near Jawahar Municipal Stadium in Kannur. The incident took place four days before it came to public attention on Sunday, October 25, after photos and videos of the mishap spread on social media.
Details and Response
Following the incident, one of the parking units was temporarily shut down, which raised public questions about the safety and condition of the entire structure. Technician N.K. Sujith stated that the slip happened when workers tried to lift the pallet using a jack during regular repair work, and he added that the matter was blown out of proportion. He explained that the team could not fix the position of the pallet because a car was parked inside the unit, and efforts to reach the vehicle owner failed. According to Mr. Sujith, the heavy pallet was unlikely to fall off its rail due to its weight, and the facility's four independent units mean the other bays can still function.
Context
Multi-level parking systems use mechanical pallets to stack vehicles efficiently in urban spaces where land is limited. These automated or semi-automated structures require regular upkeep to ensure safe operations for daily users.
