Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif credited U.S. President Donald Trump for a timely intervention in the 2025 conflict with India during his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Speaking at the UN headquarters, Mr. Sharif thanked Mr. Trump for resolute and visionary leadership, stating that the American leader saved hundreds of millions of lives in South Asia. He also raised the Kashmir issue, asserting that a just and fair solution is needed to prevent South Asia from reaching the edge of the 2025 conflict again. India had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 last year to target terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. While Mr. Trump has claimed he stopped the war between the two nations, New Delhi has consistently denied any third-party intervention and rejected Pakistan's assertions at the UN, maintaining that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India. A young diplomat from India's Permanent Mission to the UN will exercise the Right of Reply to respond to the speech. Mr. Sharif also addressed the Indus Waters Treaty, which India put in abeyance as part of diplomatic and economic measures following the Pahalgam attack, pending an end to Pakistan's support for cross-border terrorism. Furthermore, the Pakistani Prime Minister mentioned efforts to broker peace between the U.S. and Iran in West Asia, highlighting talks and a memorandum of understanding in Islamabad. He concluded by thanking Pakistan Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, for efforts to create space for diplomacy.
