Bangkok authorities report that nearly 300 millimetres of rain has fallen since Thursday afternoon, pushing water levels in canals to critical points.
Official Response
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt states that eastern parts of the city face heavy damage, with pumping stations operating at full capacity moving about 1,200 cubic metres of water per second. Authorities have prepared one million sandbags, opened temporary shelters in schools, and issued emergency alerts through the cell-broadcast system. Officials advise residents in low-lying zones to move belongings to higher ground and urge bedridden patients near life-saving equipment to consider staying in hospitals.
Warnings Ahead
The Thai Meteorological Department warns that heavy to very heavy rain will continue, driven by a low-pressure area and strengthening southwest monsoon conditions. The weather agency also warns of rough seas with waves reaching two to three metres in parts of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, advising small boats to stay ashore.
