What Happened

Supporters of the Jan Suraaj Party living in Delhi are planning to propose a new political chapter for the capital during a felicitation event for founder Prashant Kishor on Sunday. The gathering is being organised by members of the party who live in Delhi, and it will celebrate Kishor's recent win in the Bankipur bypoll.

Party Expansion

Kumar Shantanu, a member of the core committee who teaches Botany at Deshbandhu College in Delhi University, said many party supporters have been asking for a Delhi unit. He added that any decision to contest elections in the capital would only happen after checking the party's chances there. The closed-door event has not invited leaders from other political groups, though anyone who wants to join the party is welcome to attend. Other notable attendees expected at the gathering include lawyer Tathagat Harsh Vardhan, who is the son of former Buxar MP K K Tiwari, and J P Singh, a former additional director general of police from Himachal Pradesh. Both men ran as Jan Suraaj candidates in the 2025 Bihar assembly election.

Background

Until now, the party's work and elections have focused entirely on Bihar. Kishor, who used to work as an election strategist for various political parties, started Jan Suraaj after running a long campaign across Bihar centred on jobs, education, and good governance. The party faced its first big test in the 2025 Bihar assembly elections by contesting 238 seats but winning none, though Kishor himself did not run at that time. However, the party later won the Bankipur bypoll in August, giving Kishor his first personal election victory as a candidate. In that contest within the Patna constituency, he beat BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by 19,324 votes by securing 64,151 votes against Kumar's 44,827 votes. Shantanu stated that the final choice on whether to bring the party to Delhi rests entirely with Kishor and the leadership.
