Capital is moving out of the secondary market and into a large primary market pipeline, according to Madhu Lunawat, founder of The Wealth Company Mutual Fund. Retail investors are putting funds into small- and mid-cap stocks to fight a perceived personal inflation rate of 10 to 12 percent, while yields stay closer to 7 percent.
Foreign Investors And Market Polarization
Foreign institutional investors are staying cautious because of high valuations, currency depreciation, and heavy exposure to private banks. Lunawat noted that companies growing at 60 to 70 percent are quite rare, and those that do are often loss-making or trade at very high valuations. The Indian market is highly polarized, with investors ignoring attractive valuations on some quality stocks while chasing expensive ones.
Pipeline And Fund Operations
Money in the system is shifting from listed stocks into the primary market through initial public offerings and qualified institutional placements. There are nearly 2 trillion rupees worth of Sebi-approved IPOs in the pipeline, alongside nearly 130 IPOs worth over 3 trillion rupees that are filed and waiting for approval. Meanwhile, The Wealth Company Mutual Fund follows a distributor-led model, has trained 20,000 distributors, and has opened offices in smaller tier 2 and tier 3 cities to build scale.
Context
A primary market is where companies issue new shares to the public for the first time, while the secondary market is where existing shares are traded between investors. Currency depreciation makes foreign investors more cautious because a weaker local currency can reduce their overall returns when converted back to foreign money.
