A passenger bus fell off a narrow, winding road and dropped down a 20‑metre (65‑foot) embankment near Fogars de Monclús, outside Barcelona, injuring 83 people. Seven of those injured are in serious condition, 18 have moderate injuries and 58 suffered minor wounds. Local Catalan medical emergency crews arrived with twenty‑three ambulances and two medical helicopters, along with three combined firefighter‑medical units and three teams providing psychological aid. Specialist mountain‑rescue squads were also dispatched to assist in the steep terrain. Health Minister Olga Pane of the Catalan government said rescue teams are combing the area to see if any additional victims are trapped. The cause of the bus leaving the road has not been established, and authorities have opened an investigation into the incident. Officials noted that the road’s tight curves and limited visibility may have contributed, but the exact factors remain under review. The emergency response effort continued through the afternoon as medical staff treated the injured and transported them to nearby hospitals.
Context
Accidents on Catalonia’s mountainous routes are not uncommon because narrow roads and sharp bends challenge drivers, especially in adverse weather. The region’s emergency services maintain dedicated mountain‑rescue units to reach sites that are hard to access by road.
