Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal has telephonically apologised to veteran singer Daler Mehndi, bringing an end to a high-profile public dispute that began during a festive performance. The resolution was confirmed through an official statement released by singer Mika Singh's team.

The Dispute

The row started when Uniyal interrupted Mehndi mid-performance on stage at a public event in New Tehri, Uttarakhand, alleging that the singer was intoxicated and lip-syncing during a religious celebration. The public reprimand drew sharp criticism from across the entertainment industry, prompting figures like Anupam Kher, Kapil Sharma, and Rajpal Yadav to defend the musician. Mika Singh publicly demanded an apology from the politician, while the Federation of Western India Cine Employees wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the incident.

Chief Minister Intervention

Before the minister made his direct call, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had stepped in to calm tensions. Mika Singh appreciated the Chief Minister's humble approach and warm communication, noting that Dhami expressed regret on behalf of the cabinet. Although Mika stated the Chief Minister bore no personal responsibility for the clash, he insisted that the minister involved needed to make direct amends. Dhami also invited both singer brothers to return and perform in the state once again.

Context

Public figures and elected officials are expected to maintain professional decorum when interacting with citizens and visiting performers. Incidents of friction between regional leaders and visiting artists often spark wider conversations about the dignity owed to creative professionals during public engagements.
