Indian boxer Mary Kom was eliminated from the reality show Bigg Boss 20 on Saturday after staying away from controversies and struggling to match the game's strategies. Hosted by Salman Khan, the show offered her a chance to show viewers that she is a mother and a human being, rather than just an athlete, and to prove wrong the assumptions that she lacked basic household and cooking skills. Kom spent seven weeks on the show, noting that she could not fake her personality for that long and wanted to share the real story of her hard work and sacrifices over a twenty-year career.
Challenges And Reactions
During her time in the house, Kom faced criticism for a low contribution to the game alongside hurdles caused by a language barrier. She admitted to feeling disrespected at times due to fighting and manipulating tactics used by other contestants, adding that her difficulties with Hindi grammar made it hard to convey her thoughts properly without her statements seeming wrong. She experienced an argument with Uditi and felt hurt when Mahhi questioned her identity, while also noting that other participants took advantage of her language limitations.
Biopic Criticism
Outside the reality show, Kom reflected on the 2014 film Mary Kom starring Priyanka Chopra and expressed disappointment with how her life was portrayed. She stated that the biopic failed to do justice to her story and showed only ten percent of her actual struggle and hard work, which are better documented in her book Unbreakable. Consequently, she dismissed the possibility of a sequel, noting that her career is already well known and her future will hopefully be smooth and happy.
Context
Reality television shows often place public figures from diverse professional backgrounds into high-pressure environments designed to test interpersonal dynamics. Participants from sports or non-entertainment fields frequently encounter unique communication hurdles when interacting with career television personalities. Public biographical films in India often balance dramatic narrative choices with real-life events, leading subjects to occasionally express mixed feelings about cinematic adaptations of their lives.
