Raveena Tandon did not plan to become an actor, but she grew into a top star of the 1990s and an icon of Hindi cinema. As the daughter of filmmaker Ravi Tandon, she began her professional life behind the camera. Straight after finishing Class 10, she interned with ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar. Her duties included cleaning studio floors and wiping off vomit from stalls. When models failed to turn up on set, Kakkar often asked Raveena to step in for makeup and posing. She soon decided to earn pocket money through modelling, entering the film industry by default rather than through a lifelong dream. During her modelling days, film offers started coming in, though she did not actively seek them out. She was the first choice for Yash Chopra's film Darr, which later starred Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla. She turned it down because she felt uncomfortable with certain scenes, such as wearing a swimming costume. She also rejected Prem Qaidi, the film that marked Karisma Kapoor's debut, due to an uncomfortable scene. Furthermore, she turned down Phool Aur Kaante, the debut film of Ajay Devgn, because she was unsure about pursuing an acting career. She eventually took up an acting role after her friend and co-model Bunty Walia told Salman Khan about her, as Salman was searching for a fresh face. Salman saw her work separately, and she made her debut opposite him in the 1991 film Patthar Ke Phool. That debut earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Her career soon took off with major hits like Mohra, Dilwale, Andaz Apna Apna, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Dulhe Raja, alongside acclaimed dramas like Shool, Daman and Aks. Her pairing with Akshay Kumar became hugely popular after Mohra, backed by hit songs like Tip Tip Barsa Paani and Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast, though their real-life engagement eventually ended in a breakup. She also won the National Film Award for Best Actor (Female) in 2002 for her role in Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence, and starred in hit comedies with Govinda.
Context
Actors in the 1990s Bollywood industry frequently entered the field through modelling or family connections in film production, much like Raveena Tandon did. Her career spans decades of shifting cinematic trends, moving from commercial 90s masala films to South Indian projects, critically praised dramas, and recent digital streaming platforms like Netflix. Major cinematic awards like the National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards remain standard benchmarks of critical and commercial success within the Indian film industry.
