Court Hearing

The State Public Prosecutor told the Madras High Court on Monday that a Special Investigation Team will file a charge sheet soon in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences case. The case involves 84-year-old R. Veeramani, who founded Gem Granites, and others.

Investigation Status

State Public Prosecutor R. John Sathyan made the submission before Justice V. Lakshminarayanan. The judge recorded the statement and adjourned two writ petitions to November 12, 2026. These petitions were filed by R. Varaaki and advocate M.L. Ravi of Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi, who sought to transfer the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation because they alleged some Indian Police Service officers tried to protect the main accused.

Court Orders

Earlier, the court had refused a CBI probe to let the SIT work in peace on the sensitive matter, which involves the sexual abuse of many minor girls from Scheduled Castes with offenses reportedly video-recorded. The judge previously asked petitioner R. Varaaki to share materials with the SIT regarding any police officers who took money to hide the crime. The SIT has since filed two status reports, with the second one submitted on Monday, and the judge directed the Registrar to keep both reports in safe custody to prevent leaks.

Context

Special Investigation Teams are independent police units formed to handle sensitive, high-profile criminal cases that need focused attention. A charge sheet is the final formal document that police submit to a court after finishing an investigation, officially listing the charges against the accused persons before a trial begins.
