Hyundai India has launched the Bayon as its second midsize SUV, positioned between the Venue and Creta. While the Venue and Creta offer naturally aspirated petrol, turbo-petrol, and diesel engines, the Bayon arrives with a single naturally aspirated petrol engine and a CNG variant confirmed for January 2027.

Dimensions And Space

The Bayon measures 4,245 mm in length and 1,810 mm in width, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase and 205 mm of ground clearance. It trails rivals in length and height, but stands as the third-widest SUV in its comparison group and beats the Creta, Seltos, and Aircross on ground clearance. Boot space reaches 505 litres, comfortably surpassing the Honda Elevate's previous segment-best figure of 458 litres by 47 litres.

Performance And Gearboxes

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine pushing 115 hp and 144 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard and a CVT automatic on higher trims. This setup gives it a power advantage over the Maruti Victoris, Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, and Citroen Aircross. Meanwhile, Hyundai and Rushlane report a combined annual sales target of 2.5 lakh units for the Creta and Bayon to challenge Maruti Suzuki's leadership in the segment.

Technology And Safety

The Bayon debuts Hyundai's in-built generative AI voice assistant powered by Perplexity and SoundHound AI. It features a curved panoramic display combining two 12.3-inch screens, Level 2 Pro ADAS with 23 assistance features, six standard airbags, and higher-trim additions like a panoramic sunroof and Bose audio.

Context

Automakers in India frequently introduce multiple entries in the high-demand midsize SUV segment to capture different buyer groups. Pairing established mechanical components with advanced in-car technology has become a common strategy to attract tech-focused customers.
