Expert Views
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, stated that equities recovered due to value buying and strength in metals, power, and healthcare. Nair added that elevated crude prices, geopolitical worries, and caution ahead of policy decisions by the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, and Bank of Japan kept market sentiment measured. Mid and smallcap shares also saw some recovery after a sharp drop last week, though investors remained selective.
Global Cues
Global oil benchmark Brent crude fell 1.60 percent to $114.8 per barrel. In Asia, South Korea's KOSPI and Japan's 225 index finished lower, while Shanghai's SSE Composite and the Hang Seng index ended higher. European markets traded in positive territory, and US markets closed lower on Friday, October 23. Foreign Institutional Investors purchased equities worth ₹887.65 crore on Friday.
Context
Stock markets regularly fluctuate based on a mix of domestic buying trends, corporate earnings, and global economic signals like oil prices and foreign investor activity. Major central bank policy meetings often cause investors to remain cautious until interest rate and monetary policy paths become clear. Share prices in sectors like metals and healthcare often react quickly to shifts in global demand and investor risk appetite.
