Regular use of panty liners does not cause cancer, according to medical oncologist Dr. Jay Dadhania from HOC Vedanta. These thin, absorbent pads are placed inside underwear to handle daily moisture, light spotting, and discharge. However, safety questions have grown after various studies found metals and chemicals in feminine care items.

Materials And Safety

Panty liners typically consist of a soft top layer against the skin, an absorbent middle layer, and a backing to stop leaks. Their construction often involves cotton, cellulose, artificial fibers, plastics, and glues. Research also points to the presence of parabens, phthalates, and volatile organic compounds in some samples. While these substances appear in tests, finding them does not automatically mean the product is toxic or harmful. Risk depends on the exact concentration, how well the chemical enters the body, and the total exposure time. At present, no scientific data connects regular usage to cancers affecting the cervix, uterus, ovaries, or vulva.

Usage Advice

These hygiene items are not essential for every woman, even though many rely on them during travel, before menstruation, or after periods. Simple alternatives include picking breathable cotton underwear, washing the outer intimate area with water, and changing clothes frequently. Following proper hygiene steps also helps prevent unwanted skin irritation.

Context

Concerns about personal care products often rise when studies detect trace chemicals, prompting experts to study long-term exposure levels. Medical professionals advise focusing on personal comfort and basic hygiene habits rather than relying on daily disposable liners.
