Marc Marquez leaves Australia as the clear championship leader following his 24th Sprint win at Phillip Island during the circuit's final ever MotoGP weekend before it gets replaced by the Adelaide street circuit from 2027.

The Sprint Race

Starting from pole position, Marquez faced tough competition when Jorge Martin overtook him on lap three during the 13-lap Saturday race. Martin later made a mistake on lap five, allowing Marquez to regain the lead. The intense battle ended on lap eight when Martin suffered a high-speed crash, handing second place to Alex Marquez. Alex later chose not to overtake his brother to protect his championship standings. Pedro Acosta overtook Johann Zarco before Zarco retired on lap five due to a technical issue. Starting from ninth place after a poor Q2 session, Marco Bezzecchi fought back to finish fourth. Fabio Di Giannantonio secured a consecutive podium finish after his strong performance at Mandalika.

Retirements and Injuries

Alongside Martin and Zarco, riders Francesco Bagnaia, Raul Fernandez, and Maverick Vinales failed to finish the Sprint because of mechanical troubles or an old injury in Fernandez's case. Jorge Martin and Raul Fernandez withdrew from Sunday's main race due to injuries, with Martin sustaining a right wrist fracture. They joined four other riders already sidelined by injuries: Joan Mir, Fermin Aldeguer, Toprak Razgatlioglu, and Luca Marini.

Race Cancellation

Race control cancelled the Moto3, Moto2, and MotoGP races on Sunday because severe weather made it unsafe for the medical helicopter to fly. The remaining riders bid farewell to the ocean-facing track by completing two laps behind a safety car. Marquez heads to the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang with a 10-point lead over Martin, whose return remains uncertain.

Context

Weather cancellations are rare but necessary safety measures in elite motorsports when emergency air transport is grounded. Injury-plagued weekends also heavily impact championship points standings as top riders miss crucial race days.
