UPDATE - follow-up to Cyclonic storm 'Arnab' to cross Andhra Pradesh-Yanam coast as very severe storm by October 28: IMD | LIVE: Odisha has ramped up its safety measures by sending out rescue workers and gear, while Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi assigned eight ministers to look after at-risk districts.

Storm Movement And Warnings

Cyclone Arnab sits over the east-central and west-central Bay of Bengal, heading west-northwest at a speed of 13 to 15 kilometres per hour. Officials including State Disaster Management Authority Managing Director Prakhar Jain and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu are tracking the system closely. The storm is set to strengthen into a very severe system and hit the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the morning of October 28. Maximum sustained winds will reach 115 to 125 kilometres per hour, with gusts up to 140 kilometres per hour. A red cyclone warning is active for the Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring south Odisha coasts, and the potential impact has already prompted talks about urban local body elections on November 1 with State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha.

Regional Rainfall And Damage

Heavy rains continue to hit Tamil Nadu, where Ramanathapuram district saw over 100 millimetres of rainfall in areas like Rameswaram, Pamban, Thangachimadam, and R.S. Mangalam. The Nilgiris district faced seven new landslips and 15 fallen trees after receiving heavy downpours, while floods hit over 20 homes in Kodaikanal. The India Meteorological Department forecasts extremely heavy rainfall for Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on October 27 and 28, Odisha on October 28, Chhattisgarh on October 28 and 29, and east Uttar Pradesh on October 29. South Bengal districts like Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly will also see light to moderate rain from October 27 to 30, alongside heavy downpours from October 28 to 30 in places like Bankura and Purulia.

Context

Tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal during the post-monsoon season often gather strength from warm sea waters before bringing destructive winds and heavy rain to India's eastern shoreline. Governments deploy disaster response teams and ministers to vulnerable zones ahead of time to evacuate residents and preposition relief supplies, aiming to prevent casualties when the system finally makes landfall.
