Brazilian shares saw a massive drop on Monday as the country's main stock index fell by over 17.3 percent to drop below 172,000 points. The sharp fall came right after the presidential runoff results showed President Lula winning the election against Flávio Bolsonaro.
Market Reaction
This steep drop wiped out the strong positive mood that had built up in the markets after the first round of voting. Back then, Bolsonaro did much better than polls had predicted and finished ahead of Lula. Investors had hoped a Bolsonaro government would cut down on government spending to help bring down interest rates.
Election Results
President Lula secured 51.8 percent of the total votes in the runoff race. His challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, finished close behind with 48.2 percent of the vote. President Lula turns 81 on Tuesday.
Context
Stock markets around the world often react strongly to major political changes and shifts in national leadership. Investors closely watch election outcomes because new political leaders usually bring different economic policies, spending plans, and tax rules that can directly impact business growth and investment returns.
