Raichur Superintendent of Police Arunangshu Giri told young people to steer clear of alcohol and drugs and to look to Maharshi Valmiki’s life for guidance during the Valmiki Jayanti programme. He spoke after opening the celebrations at Valmiki Bhavan on Ashapur Road, noting a rise in drinking and drug use that has sparked more fights and group brawls in the city. Giri reminded the audience that Valmiki mastered archery while in exile and urged youngsters to take up sports and other activities to build discipline and stay away from harmful habits. He also highlighted road safety, asking youth to wear helmets and to focus on higher education. During the same event, Basavaraja delivered a lecture and appealed to the state government to create a research hub within Maharshi Valmiki University in Raichur to study community issues. He urged community members to use existing government welfare programmes such as scholarships, coaching for competitive exams, entrepreneurial loans and land‑rights schemes. The ceremony also honoured top‑performing students and notable local figures, and was attended by district officials, department heads and community leaders.
Context
The call comes at a time when many Indian towns report growing substance‑abuse problems among young people, prompting authorities to combine moral messaging with practical support like education and safety initiatives.
