A simple movement like bending down to tie your shoes can reveal an early warning sign of heart failure. On September 13, cardiologist Dr Dmitry Yaranov shared a social media video highlighting a lesser-known condition called bendopnea. The medical term describes sudden breathlessness that occurs when a person bends forward.
Medical Cause
According to the Mayo Clinic, heart failure happens when the heart muscle is too weak or stiff to pump blood and oxygen efficiently, though it does not mean the heart has completely stopped working. Dr Yaranov explained that bending forward causes more blood to return to the heart. When filling pressure inside the heart is already high, the organ cannot handle the extra volume. Science Direct notes that this posture shifts fluid in the abdomen, placing extra pressure on a weakened heart and raising pressure inside both the heart and lungs.
Warning Signs
This breathlessness usually appears within seconds of bending over and typically improves as soon as the person sits back up. Dr Yaranov emphasized that this symptom should not be blamed on age, weight, or being out of shape. He cautioned that it can signal early heart failure or fluid overload, and urged anyone experiencing it to consult a doctor.
