Israel is holding elections today to choose the 120 members of the 26th Knesset, or Parliament, on Tuesday, October 27, and New Delhi is closely tracking the results.

The Election Race

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a tough challenge from his closest rival, former army chief Gadi Eisenkot, and former premier Naftali Bennett, among others. Most pre-election surveys predict a hung Parliament with no party likely to win a clear majority.

Impact on India Ties

Defence, technology, and economic cooperation are expected to keep the partnership going regardless of the outcome. Mishelle Sirota, spokesperson for the Embassy of Israel in India, said in an interview with news agency ANI that the relationship will not change even for the slightest no matter who is chosen. Israeli author and political analyst Alec Pollard told PTI Videos that Israel and India will continue to be close friends, though a change in leadership could bring a new dimension to bilateral ties depending on a new prime minister's rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Institutional Pacts

India and Israel signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation on November 4, 2025. During Modi's visit to Israel in February 2026, both countries elevated their ties to a Special Strategic Partnership for Peace, Innovation and Prosperity. They also committed to deeper cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductors, quantum computing, agriculture, water management, and space, alongside trade and regional initiatives like the I2U2 grouping and the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.

Context

Elections in parliamentary democracies often bring changes in political leadership styles even when long-term strategic and economic agreements remain steady. For India, maintaining stable partnerships across West Asia involves balancing defence ties with Israel against broader economic and energy interests in the wider Gulf region.
