UPDATE - follow-up to Defender 110 now made in India: Local assembly of the Defender 110 via the completely knocked down route has brought down its ex-showroom price by up to Rs 34 lakh.
Price Cuts
This price reduction applies to the X-Dynamic HSE trim, which comes with 3-litre diesel, 3-litre petrol, and 2-litre petrol engine options. Both the locally assembled 3-litre diesel and petrol models now cost Rs 1.18 crore, marking a drop from the previous Rs 1.52 crore import price. Meanwhile, the 2.0-litre petrol model is now priced at Rs 99 lakh, down from Rs 1.13 crore, resulting in a Rs 14 lakh reduction.
Sales Background
Prior to this change, the Defender was sold purely as a fully imported model and still emerged as JLR India's best-selling model in FY2026. The Defender, Range Rover, and Sport models combined made up over 80 percent of the company's total sales in the country during the last fiscal year. Other vehicles like select versions of the Range Rover, Sport, Velar, Evoque, and Discovery Sport are also assembled locally.
Context
Local assembly helps carmakers avoid heavy import taxes charged on fully built vehicles imported from abroad. This reduction in tax burden is often passed on to customers to make luxury vehicles more affordable. Manufacturing cars inside the country also helps brands build a stronger supply chain over time.
