Market Rebound

Japan's stock market bounced back on Tuesday, ending a three-session losing streak as strong interest returned to technology shares. The benchmark Nikkei 225 advanced 1.73 percent to close at 63,268.37, after paring an earlier gain of more than two percent. The broader Topix index also rose 0.61 percent to 3,997.37.

Driving Forces

The positive shift came after artificial intelligence company Anthropic filed for a public offering in the United States. Anthropic reported steep losses alongside red-hot revenue growth in its filing, setting out plans to build advanced intelligence systems despite high development costs. Heavyweight tech stocks in Tokyo also tracked a 2.8 percent overnight rise in the US Philadelphia chips index. Daisuke Hashizume, a senior strategist at Daiwa Securities, said the market felt relief from the public offering news and chip index gains, though investors remained cautious ahead of upcoming earnings reports from major US technology firms like Alphabet and Microsoft.

Stock Movements

Chip-testing equipment maker Advantest surged 8.98 percent to give the Nikkei its biggest boost. Technology investor SoftBank Group added 4.95 percent, while chip-making equipment maker Tokyo Electron climbed 3.07 percent. Across the board, 124 stocks advanced on the Nikkei 225 while 100 declined. Other top gainers included Ibiden up 8.54 percent and Sumco up 5.50 percent. On the losing side, drugmaker Daiichi Sankyo dropped 8.16 percent, Japan Exchange Group fell 4.83 percent, and Mitsubishi Estate slid 4.04 percent.

Context

Major stock exchanges often react strongly to developments in the artificial intelligence sector because chipmakers and tech investors form a large share of market value. Public share filings by major tech startups give investors a clear look into the heavy costs and rapid growth driving the modern software industry.
