Artificial Intelligence can improve how parliaments work and help more citizens get involved if humans guide its growth with ethics and transparency, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Tuesday in New Delhi. Speaking at the final session of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, Mr. Birla noted that law-making bodies must act as true hubs for public trust, dialogue, and agreement.
Practical Steps
Mr. Birla pointed out that the Indian Parliament already uses AI to translate speeches on Sansad TV's YouTube channel into various local languages. The technology also helps translate official documents so that lawmakers from different language backgrounds can easily read them. A joint declaration signed at the forum stressed the need for safe, open, and fair use of emerging technologies while protecting each nation's security and sovereignty.
Global Peace
During his address, the Lok Sabha Speaker repeated his call for bringing youth into democratic systems. He shared India's view that permanent answers come from talks instead of war, urging nations to respect borders and seek peaceful solutions. Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, who hosted a lunch for visiting delegates, reminded the gathering that democratic traditions stretch far back in Indian history, from ancient Vaishali to the old Chola kingdom's voting systems.
Context
International forums like BRICS bring together major emerging economies to discuss shared challenges and modern governance practices. The use of digital tools and language translation technologies helps large, multilingual democracies bridge communication gaps between lawmakers and the public they serve.
