Joy Behar walked back onto the set of The View on Tuesday after staying away for close to a month following a bad fall at work. The 84-year-old comic entertainer walked back to her seat at the Hot Topics desk next to fellow co-host Sara Haines while music played and the people watching in the studio clapped warmly for her.

The Injury And Absence

Behar told the audience that she took a hard tumble inside the building and popped her shoulder out of place. She shared that the hurt was more intense than giving birth and mentioned that getting better takes more time now that she is older. Her last appearance before the break happened on September 30, and her time away covered several weeks, which included missing the episode on October 7 that marked her birthday.

Show History And Reactions

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg noted that the group spends a lot of time together and notices when someone is missing. Behar has been part of the program since it started in 1997 with the original group put together by Barbara Walters, and she holds the record as the longest-running female host of an American television talk show.

Context

Daytime television talk shows rely heavily on the familiar chemistry of their regular hosts, making extended absences quite noticeable to regular viewers. Falls among older adults often require lengthy physical therapy periods, which explains why a shoulder injury kept a veteran TV personality away from her daily duties for nearly four weeks.
