UPDATE - follow-up to Nor'easter storm batters US east coast with heavy winds and power outages: Recovery work continues across the United States east coast following a deadly nor'easter that brought severe flooding, high winds, and rough ocean conditions over the weekend.
Current Outages
Power restoration efforts are underway, with about 110,500 households still without electricity from North Carolina to New England as of Sunday afternoon, according to the website Poweroutage.US. New York accounts for more than 21,000 of those homes without power, while New Jersey has about 11,940 customers still in the dark.
Travel and Weather
The Federal Aviation Administration advised travelers to check flight details with their airlines, while FlightAware reported more than 5,000 US delays and nearly 550 cancellations. Boston Logan International Airport also faced a temporary ground delay due to the weather. The National Weather Service stated the system would weaken on Sunday night, though heavy rain is expected to last into Monday in parts of the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Coastal flood warnings have been called off in several parts of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Context
Severe coastal storms like nor'easters frequently strike the eastern seaboard of the United States during transitional weather seasons, driven by contrasting air masses colliding over the Atlantic Ocean. These intense systems routinely generate gale-force winds, storm surges, and heavy precipitation that challenge regional utility and transport infrastructure.
