A strong weekend storm known as a nor'easter hit the eastern coast of the United States, bringing heavy rain, rough sea waves, floods and strong winds that knocked down trees and power lines. Nearly 150,000 homes lost power from North Carolina up to New England, with areas like Boston and the New York City region facing heavy impact.
Official Actions and Casualties
One person died in the storm on Saturday when a falling tree hit him in a Brooklyn parking lot. The victim was a 56-year-old worker for the New York City housing authority, and he was later declared dead at Brookdale University hospital. Police noted that officials had not yet confirmed if the wind caused that tree to fall. In Queens, another fallen tree and downed power lines blocked a road, leading the fire department to evacuate a nearby building with no injuries reported.
Travel and Emergencies
Governors took action as the wild weather moved through the mid-Atlantic and New England. New York governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for several counties including the Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Suffolk and Westchester. Eight counties in New Jersey also stayed under a state of emergency as residents cleared flood water and debris from streets and homes near the coast. The bad weather caused major travel trouble. The Federal Aviation Administration told travelers to check flight details with their airlines, while FlightAware tracked over 3,000 flight delays and nearly 430 cancellations nationwide. The National Weather Service warned that coastal flooding would continue alongside the tides from the Jersey Shore down to North Carolina's northern Outer Banks, with more moderate floods expected along the Massachusetts coast.
