Celebration in Nattika

Long-jumper Ancy Sojan won a silver medal at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, sparking loud celebrations back home in Nattika, Thrissur. Her family, neighbours, and Jebi Mather, MP, gathered at her house to watch the event on TV. Her father Sojan, mother Jancy, and siblings watched anxiously as her opening jump measured 6.49 metres. Excitement grew when she improved her mark to 6.53 metres on her fifth try. A strong final jump by Chinese athlete Huang Yingying stopped Ancy from winning gold, but the silver medal still brought immense joy. Firecrackers burst and people shared sweets in the neighbourhood to mark the achievement.

Family Support and Background

This is Ancy Sojan's second consecutive silver medal at the Asian Games, following her podium finish in Hangzhou. Her father Sojan works as an autorickshaw driver and saved his earnings to fund her athletic training despite money troubles. Her sports career started at Government Fisheries Higher Secondary School in Nattika before she grew into a national-level talent.
