Strike Postponed

Bank employees have postponed their planned three-day nationwide strike that was set to begin on Monday, September 28. The late-night announcement came after talks were held between the United Forum of Bank Unions and the Indian Banks' Association on Sunday night at around 9:30 PM. During these discussions, it was decided that a high-level committee will be formed by both groups to look into declaring all Saturdays as holidays.

Key Demands

The protest was called to press for several long-standing demands, including a five-day work week, updating pension benefits, and giving the same dearness allowance to all pensioners. Bank workers who fall under the National Pension System also want the option to switch back to the old pension scheme. Earlier on September 11, bank employees had already staged a one-day nationwide strike over these same issues.

Context

When multiple bank holidays fall back-to-back, customers often face heavy difficulties with cash withdrawals and branch services. To prevent major public inconvenience, bank unions and management frequently hold last-minute talks to resolve disputes and keep essential financial services running smoothly.
