Indian benchmark indices are likely to see a negative start to the trading day, with GIFT Nifty trading around 23,140 in early trade to signal a weak opening for domestic equity markets. Global share markets opened cautiously as oil prices rose again amid doubts over a US-Iran truce. US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend and claimed Tehran was desperate to make a deal. This rejection pushed Brent crude futures up by $1.32 to $105.64 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 70 cents to $93.11 a barrel. Gold prices dropped to around $4,265 an ounce as high energy costs maintained pressure on the Federal Reserve. On the domestic side, foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 3,696 crore, while domestic institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 2,838 crore. According to The Economic Times, Indian stock markets are currently witnessing a correction influenced by these global geopolitical tensions and excessive valuations, with analysts warning that markets may stay volatile and range-bound in the near term if crude prices remain high.

Context

Stock markets often react quickly to changes in global crude oil prices and Middle East tensions because higher energy costs increase inflation pressures and impact corporate profits. Foreign investor selling combined with high oil prices frequently creates downward pressure on Indian benchmark indices during global market corrections.
