Medical Experts' Insights
Dr Ajit Menon from Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Dr Geeta Malkan-Billa from Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital explain that the pain can closely mimic each other. Acid reflux usually brings a burning feeling behind the breastbone after a spicy or fatty meal, along with a sour taste, belching, or food coming back up, and the symptoms often get better with antacids.
Warning Signs
In contrast, heart-related pain tends to happen with physical effort like walking, and it can spread to the throat, both arms, or the jaw with a choking feeling or breathlessness. Dr Geeta warns that people should visit the emergency room or consult a doctor immediately if they experience repeated chest pain. She also notes that heart pain can start and stop suddenly, and that women, older adults, and people with diabetes might feel milder signs like tiredness, nausea, or vomiting. Dr Ajit points out that even doctors sometimes mistake a heart attack for acidity until an ECG is done, and stomach discomfort, walking pain, or even belching can sometimes signal a cardiac event.
Context
Medical tests like an ECG and a Troponin I blood test help doctors tell the difference between heart issues and digestive problems. Experts advise ruling out a serious heart condition first when chest discomfort happens, especially for people with high cardiovascular risks like diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking habits, or high cholesterol.
