Arsenal's Carabao Cup last-16 match against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium was delayed for more than eight minutes after a drone appeared in the sky above the pitch. Referee Michael Salisbury stopped play with one minute and 40 seconds on the clock while Arsenal waited to take a free-kick. The official spoke with managers Mikel Arteta and Matt Lawlor alongside security staff and police before players were briefly waved back to the tunnel.

Investigation and Restart

While police investigated the incident, home fans chanted at the operator before the drone eventually disappeared. According to the Guardian, at least eight minutes were added to the first half. Play resumed after authorities reportedly located the drone operator.

Context

Unauthorised drones flying over sports stadiums pose significant security and safety risks to players and crowds, leading to strict match suspensions until the airspace is cleared. Such incidents require immediate intervention by stadium security and local law enforcement to trace operators and ensure public safety.
