Public conversations on Discord will soon show up in web search results, a change that has sparked fresh privacy worries among users. Discord announced on Tuesday that it plans to make chats from public servers easier to find on the internet. The update focuses on more than 63,000 servers that are part of Discord's Server Discovery feature.
Timeline and Controls
Starting November 16, every Discoverable Server will get its own web page that may feature automated summaries of active chats. Beginning in mid-December, selected messages from public channels may also appear in search engine results. Server administrators can pick which channels are included, and individual users can opt out of having their messages searched. Published messages will not show usernames or pictures, and private servers, direct messages, and group chats are excluded. The setting is turned off by default for teen users and in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea due to legal rules.
User Backlash
The announcement has led to pushback over privacy concerns. Some users worry about exposing chats to audiences far beyond their original context. Others have questioned whether these conversations could be used to train artificial intelligence models without consent, drawing comparisons to past controversies over Reddit's data-sharing practices.
Context
Online platforms increasingly face user pushback when they change how public posts are shared or indexed across the wider web. Discord is positioning this change to help people find useful tips and discussions that are currently buried inside its servers, much like traditional internet forums work.
