UPDATE - follow-up to Politics live: Australia Post chief paid 'mind-blowing' bonus; Labor says One Nation should justify Bluey 'satire': Australia Post outgoing chief executive Paul Graham received a $1.2 million bonus in addition to his $1.64 million base salary for the last financial year. The bonus followed a $139.4 million property sale that pushed the organisation into a pre-tax profit of $31.8 million. Without those property sales, Australia Post would have faced a pre-tax loss of $107.6 million as letter volumes dropped by 14.7% in the 2026 financial year. Graham confirmed to Senate estimates on Tuesday night that part of his bonus was tied to executing this property strategy. Liberal senator Sarah Henderson called the payout a mind-blowing amount of money.

Security Fears

Meanwhile, federal politicians continue to report serious safety concerns following an alleged attack on independent MP Helen Haines last week. Australian Federal Police commissioner Krissy Barrett revealed the force received 785 protective security reports regarding adverse content against federal lawmakers in the first six months of this year. Barrett noted that women politicians were three times more likely to report offensive or threatening contact that was sexualised or gender-based. During the same Senate hearings, Western Australian senator Fatima Payman revealed she received a death threat email that forced her to cancel a local community market stall after the AFP stated officers could not attend to assist. Greens leader David Shoebridge also proposed a $21-a-week tax cut funded by higher taxes on gas exports during an address at the National Press Club. Additionally, Communications Minister Anika Wells stated that the ABC is well within its rights to pursue legal action against One Nation over the party's use of the Bluey cartoon in its own series.

Context

Senate estimates hearings give federal politicians a chance to question government agencies and public bodies about their spending and operations. Australia Post operates as a government-owned business that relies heavily on its commercial strategies to offset declining physical mail volumes as digital communication grows.
