UPDATE - follow-up to Politics live: Australia Post chief paid 'mind-blowing' bonus; Labor says One Nation should justify Bluey 'satire': Australia Post outgoing chief executive Paul Graham received a 1.2 million dollar bonus on top of his 1.64 million dollar base salary last financial year.

Australia Post Finances

Graham confirmed to Senate estimates on Tuesday night that the bonus came after a 139.4 million dollar property sale pushed the organisation into a profit. Australia Post reported a profit before tax of 31.8 million dollars, but would have faced a loss of 107.6 million dollars without the property sales, as letter volumes dropped by 14.7 percent in the 2026 financial year. Liberal senator Sarah Henderson called the bonus a mind-blowing amount of money.

Security and Threats

Meanwhile, federal politicians continue to raise safety alarms following an alleged attack on independent MP Helen Haines. Australian Federal Police commissioner Krissy Barrett revealed the force received 785 protective security reports regarding adverse content against federal parliamentarians in the first six months of this year. Barrett noted women politicians were three times more likely to report receiving offensive or sexualised contact. Western Australian senator Fatima Payman also revealed receiving a death threat email during Senate estimates, leading her to cancel a local community stall after the AFP stated they would not attend to assist. Additionally, a 46-year-old man was charged for allegedly making false claims and seeking compensation about injuries in the Bondi Beach terror attack.

Context

Senate estimates hearings are formal sessions where Australian government departments and agencies answer questions from senators about their spending and operations. Public scrutiny during these sessions frequently addresses executive pay structures, public safety, and official responses to emerging threats.
