UPDATE - follow-up to Days after claims of irregularities in garbage contracts, Chief Minister meets with Opposition: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar asked MLAs and MLCs from Bengaluru for help to break the city's waste mafia during an all-party meeting at his official residence, Krishna. R. Ashok, the Leader of the Opposition, skipped the meeting after previously accusing the government of favoring an ineligible company on a ₹133-crore tender floated by the GBA and demanding a high-level probe.
Waste Tenders
The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited is currently re-tendering 16 of 21 waste management packages. Mr. Shivakumar explained plans to award 33 contracts across 27 Assembly constituencies to collect up to 9,000 tonnes of waste. All collection vehicles must use GPS tracking and be brand new. BSWML CEO Karee Gowda stated that many contractors refused the Letter of Acceptance because they want a nearly 30% premium instead of the 14% approved by the Cabinet. These annual contracts are worth ₹584 crore, and contractors want to add another ₹180 crore.
Action And Projects
The Karnataka government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act for waste management. Mr. Shivakumar also mentioned plans to change the alignment of the North-South Tunnel following citizen concerns about Lalbagh, alongside a 10-year city development plan worth ₹1 lakh crore for Bengaluru's 500th founding anniversary in 2037.
Context
Waste management disputes between state governments and private contractors often center around cost margins and operational requirements. Urban infrastructure projects of this scale usually require coordination across multiple local bodies and state agencies.
