A UNESCO expert committee has called for stronger local community participation in protecting the World Heritage Site of Hampi. The experts shared their initial observations with senior Tourism Department officials at Vidhana Soudha on October 28, following a four-day visit to the site.
Expert Observations
During the meeting, the delegation noted areas that need ongoing attention. These include better institutional capacity for the Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority, steady heritage administration, and systematic impact assessments for future projects. A full report from the UNESCO committee is due by mid-December.
Statements From Experts And Officials
UNESCO expert George Abungu from Kenya praised the physical state of the monuments and the conservation work done so far. He stated that the delegation visited as friends and partners rather than investigators. He also pointed out that local residents must take an active part in conservation and share the benefits of tourism and heritage growth. Another UNESCO expert, Ichida Shimoda of Japan, suggested giving the Hampi management authority specialized staff and enough funds. Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Uma Mahadevan stated that the site's value must be protected without compromise while keeping the local community involved.
Context
Hampi is a globally recognized heritage site that combines ancient history with a living local population. Managing such sites requires balancing modern development and tourism needs with the strict preservation of historical monuments.
