French footballer Kylian Mbappe has issued a public apology after facing sharp backlash for remarks regarding an online meme comparing his appearance to a Chinese dictator. The controversy began after a clip circulated from an interview ahead of his appearance on the French online talk show The Bridge, where Mbappe stated his favorite meme featured him depicted as a Chinese dictator. The altered image actually showed his face on the blue-suited body of Mao Zedong.

Business Backlash

At least three Chinese companies announced they were ending brand deals with the Real Madrid star in response to the comments. Beverage maker Dongpeng, dairy giant Mengniu, and cheese maker Milkground stated they were cutting ties because they oppose any actions hurting national sentiment. Before the fallout, Mbappe's face appeared in advertisements across China in subway stations and elevators. The China Football Association lodged a stern protest with Real Madrid and demanded a formal apology from both the player and the club. Meanwhile, the China Media Group suspended broadcasts of Spanish La Liga matches and any other games featuring the French player, while also removing advertisements showing him.

Official Apologies

Mbappe stated on Tuesday that his comment was ill-judged and that he now understands it hurt many people in China and Chinese communities worldwide. He added that he has deep respect for the Chinese people and their history. La Liga also issued an apologetic statement noting that the remarks were made in a personal capacity and did not represent the league or its clubs. Spanish league president Javier Tebas met with China's ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing, on Tuesday to address the fallout and discuss a resolution, calling China a strategic partner for the league.

Context

Mao Zedong founded the modern-day People's Republic of China after leading the Communist Party to victory in a civil war. He remains a prominent historical figure in China, though his legacy includes authoritarian campaigns like the Great Leap Forward. Sports figures frequently sign major global endorsement deals with multinational brands, making swift damage control essential when international diplomatic or cultural sensitivities are triggered.
