Football star Kylian Mbappe and his club Real Madrid have issued separate public apologies following severe backlash in China over the player's remarks about a meme depicting late Chinese leader Mao Zedong.

Sponsor Fallout

The controversy began after Mbappe appeared on the French talk show "The Bridge" and discussed a meme featuring his face overlaid on an image resembling Mao, referring to the historical figure as a Chinese dictator. The comments immediately triggered widespread anger, leading at least three major Chinese commercial partners to sever ties with the French forward. Dairy producer Mengniu, beverage maker Dongpeng, and a cheese company each released statements condemning remarks that hurt national sentiment. According to CBS Sports, state broadcaster CCTV apps also stopped featuring news on Mbappe and halted La Liga match streams, while La Liga president Javier Tebas issued an apology on Tuesday to protect the league's Chinese partnerships.

Apologies Issued

Mbappe took to social media on Tuesday to express regret, admitting his remarks were ill-judged and stating he holds deep respect for China and its history. Real Madrid followed with an official statement on Wednesday, apologizing for any discomfort caused by their player and aligning themselves with his regret.

Context

Mao Zedong established the People's Republic of China in 1949 and led the ruling Communist Party until 1976. Public commentary involving him remains a deeply sensitive subject in the country today.
