The Bharatiya Janata Party has named Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election from Madhya Pradesh. The party's central election committee approved his candidature in a statement issued on Wednesday.
The Schedule
The by-election is scheduled to take place on November 12. Counting of votes will happen on the same day, while the last date to file nominations is November 2 and candidates can withdraw by November 5. The entire election process will end by November 16.
Background
This bypoll is being held to fill the seat vacated by former Union Minister L. Murugan. Mr. Murugan previously served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting before resigning from the Union Council of Ministers and the Rajya Sabha on October 14. His full term was originally set to end on April 2, 2030.
Context
Rajya Sabha by-elections follow a specific timeline governed by the Election Commission of India to quickly fill vacant seats in the upper house of Parliament. When a sitting member resigns before their term finishes, a fresh election is conducted for the remaining duration of that term.
