A rockfall at Amalagiri on the Mundakayam‑Kuttikkanam stretch of the Kottarakara‑Dindigul National Highway halted traffic for almost thirty minutes on Wednesday morning.
What Happened
A large mass of rock and soil came down onto the highway, blocking all vehicles. The blockage forced drivers to stop and wait. Local residents together with police and highway officials arrived quickly, removed the debris and cleared the road, allowing traffic to resume within half an hour. The incident was reported on the Kottarakara–Dindigul National Highway, a major arterial road in the region.
Background
Rockfalls and landslips have been a recurring problem on this route. Two months earlier a major landslip caused widespread delays and led the district administration to impose a night‑travel ban on the stretch for several days to protect commuters. The ban was lifted after the risk subsided.
Context
The Mundakayam‑Kuttikkanam section connects Idukki with Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts, so any closure affects many daily commuters. The hilly terrain of the Western Ghats makes the highway prone to such slides, especially during the monsoon season.
