India can meet more than 80 days of fuel demand thanks to its combined strategic petroleum reserves, expanded refineries and import terminals, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told attendees at the opening of India Energy Week 2027 in Kolkata on Monday. Puri said the growth in refinery count and new import terminals often prompts questions why the country's SPR is not larger; he replied that when all storage facilities are added together the capacity exceeds eighty days. He added that India's energy security framework goes beyond the SPR, relying on increased refining capacity, modern import infrastructure and additional storage sites. Puri highlighted that India is the world's third‑largest oil consumer and fourth‑largest refining hub, and that the nation is now shaping global energy discussions. He cited India's leadership roles through its BRICS presidency, the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance as evidence of its active participation. The four‑day India Energy Week will run from 28 to 31 January 2027 in Kolkata. The report comes from a journalist invited by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Context
Strategic petroleum reserves are a key buffer for countries that rely heavily on imported oil. India’s expanded refining and storage network allows it to claim a longer self‑sufficiency period despite growing demand.
