GeneralKerala Government Doubles Payouts for Animal Attacks and Harvest Damage

The Kerala government will double financial aid payouts for human fatalities and farm ruin caused by wild animals. Forest and Wildlife Minister Shibu Baby John announced the policy shift at a farmer safety meeting held in Kozhikode on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Payout Details and Teamwork

Under the updated rates, affected growers will receive 15 rupees for every coconut ruined by monkeys and other creatures, along with 30 rupees for each cocoa plant. Minister John promised strict steps to stop delays in sending out money for harvest losses. He added that the state will no longer view animal-human clashes as the duty of the forest department alone, bringing in the agriculture and revenue departments to work together.

Strategy and New Projects

Officials have laid out a three-step plan focused on stopping, reducing, and paying for damage. The state has picked out 55 priority grama panchayats and high-risk zones to set up multi-layered safety barriers. Agriculture Minister T. Siddique noted that the state will keep homes and farmland out of Eco-Sensitive Areas. Authorities plan to use high-tech tools like artificial intelligence, remote sensing, camera monitors, and early warning systems, alongside a trial project for farm homestays and ecotourism to boost local incomes.

Context

Human-wildlife conflict has grown as wild animals wander into farmland near forest edges, leading to friction between local communities and conservation officials. Bringing multiple government departments together and using modern technology reflects a broader shift toward community-centered protection methods in farming regions.
