Official Rejection
India has strongly rejected recent remarks made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir at the United Nations General Assembly, calling them unwarranted. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the matter relates directly to India's territorial integrity and sovereignty. He asserted that no external party has any locus standi on the issue.
Past Remarks
President Erdogan had used his UNGA address to speak about resolving disputes in South Asia through dialogue, specifically mentioning Kashmir within that context and suggesting it be addressed within the framework of the United Nations Charter. This is not the first time Turkey has brought up the topic on an international platform, as Erdogan also raised the matter at the UN General Assembly in September of last year and during a visit to Pakistan in February 2025.
Context
International bodies like the United Nations General Assembly serve as global stages where heads of state often raise regional disputes, though nations involved frequently object to external commentary on matters they consider strictly internal or bilateral. India maintains a consistent diplomatic stance that bilateral issues between India and Pakistan do not require any third-party mediation.
